Scientists estimate that 20,000 to 25,000 polar bears live throughout
the Northern Hemisphere in areas that are covered by sea ice for
extensive periods. Two-thirds of the world's polar bears
could disappear by 2050 as global warming continues to melt the
Arctic's sea ice, according to a series of U.S. government studies.
Without efficient and rapid measures of protections, polar bears could disappear within a few decades.
The main cause of this threat is the fast melting of sea ice due to carbon emissions. The transport industry, especially road transports, represents one of the major source of carbon emissions. Since 1986, the Norwegian foundation Bellona works with actors from industry, institutions and politics areas in order to adopt measures against climate change.
Newteon and Bellona share this common goal and therefore recently met to discuss this crucial topic. The general use of electric vehicles appeared to be a realistic, reliable and recommended solution in order to contribute significantly and durably to reducing carbon emissions.
